Sydney is one of Australia’s most famous tourist destinations to date, with its famous Sydney opera house situated on darling harbour as the main postcard to take home. However, if you’re heading to Sydney in the spring or summer, another picture postcard destination would be one of the many 37 beaches along the shores of Sydney.
Usually most often visited on the weekends, going to the beach in Sydney is to the locals like going to church on Sundays. You’ll see people there as early as 8 in the morning, sipping on a latte at the nearby café or even holding it in hand together with their beach bags and volley balls.
So how do you go about taking in the best of the beaches around Sydney? One way to really get the most out of it, and especially if you only have a day to explore, would be to take an ocean / coastal walk. There’re two to choose from, both which I highly recommend. The first being Bondi to Bronte which is around 3.5km long, and the second being Bondi to Coogee Beach, which approximately takes two hours.
The great thing about these two walks is that they’re on the way to each other, meaning if you feel like the 3.5km walk is good enough, you can choose to stop at Bronte beach, but if you want to take in even more of the beautiful scenery, you can continue your journey toward Coogee Beach on the same stretch.
All the beaches along this path offer something different. Bondi Beach, more known to be a surfer’s beach, with its crowded shores and ripped currents on certain days, to Tamarama, a beach affectionately named by the locals as Glamourama, for all its high heeled celebrities and rich people that frequent its sandy shores
If you head up north toward Sydney you’ll discover the beach scene there to be quite the opposite. One beach definitely worth the visit up north would be Manly beach with its golden sands and its fellow bronzed beach goers. Surfs up on this beach as well but its far more a serene place compared to the beaches down south. Other beaches along the northern stretch include Freshwater beach, catered to families and those who just want to relax , Narrabeen; an all round beach with all the water sport activities you can think of exist, and further up more the more secluded beaches like Avalon, Whale beach and Palm beach.
Whichever one you choose though remember one thing; Sunscreen. Beaches over here in Sydney really give off strong heat rays and though it might be a delight for the suntan lovers, we don’t want anyone getting burnt!
